AISLES AND COUNTERS
How wide should store aisles be, and how high the counter?
The 2010 ADA Standards give the width of an accessible route, the height of a usable counter part and the fitting room's turning space; the building code's occupant load factor sizes the exits. [1, 2]
| Figure | Value | What it is for | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accessible route | 36 in (915 mm) | Clear width of a walking route between fixtures | 2010 ADA Standards §403.5.1 [1] |
| Sales counter part | 36 in (915 mm) high at most | At least 36 in long for a side approach, or 30 in long with knee space | 2010 ADA Standards §904.4.1-904.4.2 [1] |
| Check-out aisle counter | 38 in (965 mm) high at most | Counter surface at an accessible check-out aisle | 2010 ADA Standards §904.3.2 [1] |
| Fitting room | 60 in (1,525 mm) turning space | Inside an accessible fitting room, with a bench | 2010 ADA Standards §803 [1] |
| Fitting room bench | 42 × 20 to 24 in | Seat 17 to 19 in (430 to 485 mm) high | 2010 ADA Standards §903 [1] |
| Occupant load factor | 60 ft² gross | Sales floor, for sizing exits; stock and storage rooms 300 ft² gross | IBC Table 1004.5, as adopted in Illinois [2] |
The ADA Standards apply across the US; your adopted building and fire codes set exit and aisle rules, which can ask for more than 36 in.
These figures are published guidance for an early layout, and they differ from place to place. FloorPlanCraft does not certify a plan as safe, accessible, licensable or code-compliant; confirm sizes, exits and accessibility with your local authority and qualified professionals.
ROOMS AND ITEMS
What the boutique template includes
Linen & Lane is a 12 × 9 m plan: a sales floor with display windows either side of the entrance, a stockroom with the back office, and a staff washroom. A 1.2 m walkway runs from the entrance to both back doors. Item sizes are the planner's concept models, not a particular maker's products; check yours with the supplier.
| Room | Width × depth | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Sales floor | 12 × 6.4 m | 76.8 m² (827 ft²) |
| Stockroom & office | 8 × 2.6 m | 20.8 m² (224 ft²) |
| Staff washroom | 4 × 2.6 m | 10.4 m² (112 ft²) |
Measured on the plan's wall lines, as the planner reports room areas; a room that is not a rectangle gives its outer width and depth.

QUESTIONS
Retail store floor plan questions
How wide should aisles be in a retail store?
An accessible route through the shop needs at least 36 in (915 mm) of clear width under the 2010 ADA Standards, with a 60 in (1,525 mm) circle or T-shaped space wherever a wheelchair has to turn. Your adopted building and fire codes set the exit aisles, which can be wider. [1]
How high should a cash wrap or sales counter be?
The ADA Standards set no single counter height, but a sales counter needs a part at most 36 in (915 mm) high: 36 in long for a side approach, or 30 in long with knee space. A counter at an accessible check-out aisle can be up to 38 in (965 mm). The template's cash wrap is a 1,050 mm concept model with no lowered part, so add one in your own plan. [1]
How big should a fitting room be?
An accessible fitting room needs a 60 in (1,525 mm) turning space and a bench 42 in long and 20 to 24 in deep, its seat 17 to 19 in high. The template's fitting bank is three 1.2 m cabins; check your own cabins with their supplier. [1]
How many people can a 1,000 sq ft shop hold?
For sizing exits, the building code counts one occupant per 60 ft² gross of sales floor, so 1,000 ft² gives about 17 people (1,000 ÷ 60 = 16.7). That factor sizes exits and washrooms; it is not a comfort or merchandising figure. [2]
Will FloorPlanCraft check my store against the code?
No. Plan check flags overlapping items, blocked doorways and the clearance guidance it carries; the figures on this page are published planning references. A layout is a concept for discussion: confirm exits, aisles and accessibility with your building authority and a qualified professional.
Do I need an account, and can I use it on a phone?
No account is needed to open the template, edit it and export a plan; sign in to save versions and publish a view-only link. You can read this page and open shared plans on a phone; for drawing the plan, use a desktop or laptop.
