AISLES AND CHECKOUTS

How wide should grocery aisles be, and how many checkouts must be accessible?

The 2010 ADA Standards give the width of an accessible route, how many check-out aisles must be accessible and how high their counters can be; the building code's occupant load factors size the exits for the sales floor and the stockroom. [1, 2]

ROOMS AND ITEMS

What the hypermarket template includes

Harvest Hall is a 64 × 56 m plan. The entrance opens beside the cart corrals, customer service and produce; eleven grocery runs have 2.4 m aisles, a 3 m cross aisle and an endcap at every end; reach-in coolers, bunker freezers, open multidecks, the bakery and deli counters with a staff aisle behind them, and a wine and seafood corner run round the edge; thirteen staffed lanes and a ten-kiosk self-checkout pod make the front end. A smaller starter, Green Basket (32 × 28 m, about 9,600 sq ft, four lanes), is in the template picker too. Item sizes are the planner's concept models, not a particular maker's products; check yours with the supplier.

QUESTIONS

Supermarket floor plan questions

How wide should aisles be in a grocery store?

An accessible route, aisles included, needs at least 36 in (915 mm) of clear width under the 2010 ADA Standards. Most grocers plan wider aisles so two carts can pass: the hypermarket template uses 2.4 m between gondolas and the neighbourhood market 1.8 m. Those are the templates' choices, not a rule; your adopted building and fire codes set the exit aisles. [1]

How many checkout lanes must be accessible?

Table 227.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards asks for 1 accessible check-out aisle of 1 to 4, 2 of 5 to 8, 3 of 9 to 15, and 3 plus 20 percent of the aisles beyond 15, counted for each function; a selling space under 5,000 ft² needs no more than one. Its counter surface can be 38 in (965 mm) high at most. The template's 13 lanes are concept models: check the lanes you buy. [1]

How big is a supermarket compared with a neighbourhood market?

The two starters show the range: Green Basket is 896 m² (about 9,600 sq ft) with five grocery runs and four lanes; Harvest Hall is 3,584 m² (about 38,600 sq ft) with eleven runs, 13 lanes and a self-checkout pod. For sizing exits, the building code counts one occupant per 60 ft² gross of sales floor, so Harvest Hall's 2,920 m² (31,431 ft²) sales floor gives about 524 people (31,431 ÷ 60). [2]

Will FloorPlanCraft check my store against the code?

No. Plan check flags overlapping items, blocked doorways and the clearance guidance it carries; the figures on this page are published planning references. A layout is a concept for discussion: confirm exits, aisles, refrigeration and accessibility with your building authority and a qualified professional.

Do I need an account, and can I use it on a phone?

No account is needed to open the template, edit it and export a plan; sign in to save versions and publish a view-only link. You can read this page and open shared plans on a phone; for drawing the plan, use a desktop or laptop.
