BB103 sizes a space as a base area plus an area per pupil, so per-pupil figures scaled from its 30-pupil sizes are approximate for much smaller or larger groups. Arizona's figure is a minimum for a district's classrooms taken together, not for each room.

METHOD

How the calculation works

Area per pupil is the room's area divided by its pupils. It is then placed against England's Building Bulletin 103 zones, sized for 30 pupils [1], Arizona's minimum per student [2] and California's minimum room size [3].

Area per pupil
length × width ÷ pupils
BB103 zones per pupil
each zone's area for 30 pupils ÷ 30
Pupils in zone C
area ÷ (62 ÷ 30) to area ÷ (55 ÷ 30), rounded down
Arizona
area in ft² × the grade's counted share ÷ pupils, against the grade's minimum; students at the minimum rounded down
California
area in ft² against the grade's minimum room size

Worked example

The calculator's starting values: an 8.0 × 7.5 m room for 30 pupils in grades 4–6.

Area
8.0 × 7.5 m = 60.0 m² (646 ft²)
Area per pupil
60.0 ÷ 30 = 2.00 m² (21.5 ft²)
BB103 zone C per pupil
55–62 m² ÷ 30 = 1.83 m²–2.07 m² · within zone C
Pupils in zone C
29 to 32
Arizona, grades 4–6
646 ft² ÷ 30 = 21.5 ft² against 28 ft² · short; 23 students at the minimum
California, grades 1–12
646 ft² against 960 ft² · short

The same room can sit inside England's standard zone and short of both US minimums: the three sets of figures were written for different school systems and measure different things.

England's figures are non-statutory guidance; Arizona's is a district-wide minimum; California's are standards for new school plans.

Published planning figures for an early check, not an approval of a room. Your school system's own standards decide; confirm them with your district or education authority.

QUESTIONS

Questions about this calculator

Why divide BB103's areas by 30?

BB103 gives classroom areas for a group of 30 pupils, so the calculator divides each zone by 30 to compare per pupil. BB103 sizes a space as a base area plus an area per pupil, so the scaled figure is approximate for much smaller or larger groups. [1]

Why does the Arizona check count only part of the room?

Arizona's rule counts all of a general classroom toward the minimum through grade 6, but 90% of general and specialty space for grades 7 and 8 and 85% for grades 9 to 12. The calculator takes that share of the room before it divides by the students. [2]

Is Arizona's figure a size for each classroom?

No. It is a minimum of classroom area per student across a district's classrooms taken together. The calculator applies it to one room as a guide to how that room compares. [2]

Why does a room under 7 m deep get a note?

BB103 says a space with a depth of less than 7 m may need an area in the upper part of its zone, because a shallow room is harder to arrange. The calculator adds that note when the room's shorter side is under 7 m. [1]

Which figures apply to my school?

Those of your own school system. The calculator shows England's guidance and two US states' rules because they are published in full and readable; other states and countries set their own figures.
