Dental operatory size calculator
Enter a treatment room's inside size to check it against published room areas and one dental chair's full movement.
Operatory size checker
Measure the treatment room inside its walls: the length along the chair, head to foot, and the width across it.
Treatment room · 11.9 m² (128 ft²)
Meets the VA treatment-room area, below the DoD'sAlong the room, the chair's movement fits, 1,266 mm (4 ft 2 in) to spare.
- Room area
- 3.60 × 3.30 m = 11.9 m² (128 ft²)
- VA multi-functional room
- 11.1 m² (120 ft²) · met
- DoD general dentistry room
- 12.1 m² (130 ft²) · short
- VA special-needs room
- 13.4 m² (144 ft²) · short
- Along the chair
- 3,600 mm (11 ft 10 in) − 2,334 mm (7 ft 8 in) movement = 1,266 mm (4 ft 2 in); centred, 633 mm (2 ft 1 in) at each end
- At the head end
- 633 mm (2 ft 1 in) beyond the movement, chair centred · at least zone A, 500 mm (1 ft 8 in)
- Beside the backrest
- (3,300 mm (10 ft 10 in) − 631 mm) ÷ 2 = 1,335 mm (4 ft 5 in) each side, chair centred
- Side walls from the chair's centre line
- 1,650 mm (5 ft 5 in) · beyond zone C, 1,500 mm (4 ft 11 in)
Cabinets on the side walls would sit beyond zone C, the 1.5 m circle within which the ISO/FDI scheme, as one maker describes it, puts fixed cabinets: mobile carts or a 12 o'clock unit bring them closer. The head-end check asks for zone A's 500 mm (1 ft 8 in), where the zone sheet puts the dentist's and assistant's stools, beyond the chair's movement: this page's own stand-in, as the chair guide gives no position for the mouth. The A-dec figure is one maker's chair: check your own chair's guide.

METHOD
How the calculation works
Two checks: the room's area against the VA and DoD treatment-room areas [1, 2], and its length and width against the A-dec 511 chair's published dimensions [3], with the chair centred.
- Area
- length × width, compared in ft² with 120 (VA), 130 (DoD) and 144 (VA special needs)
- Along the chair
- length − the chair's full movement (2,334 mm factory-set, 2,410 mm maximum) = spare; half at each end
- At the head end
- spare ÷ 2, against zone A's 500 mm
- Beside the backrest
- (width − 631 mm backrest) ÷ 2 each side
- Side walls
- width ÷ 2 from the chair's centre line, against zone C's 1,500 mm
Worked example
The calculator's starting values: a 3.6 × 3.3 m room and the chair at its factory-set upper limit.
- Area
- 3.60 × 3.30 m = 11.9 m² (128 ft²): at least the VA's 120 ft², below the DoD's 130 ft²
- Along the chair
- 3,600 mm (11 ft 10 in) − 2,334 mm (7 ft 8 in) = 1,266 mm (4 ft 2 in) spare; 633 mm (2 ft 1 in) at each end
- At the head end
- 633 mm (2 ft 1 in) · at least zone A's 500 mm (1 ft 8 in)
- Beside the backrest
- (3,300 mm (10 ft 10 in) − 631 mm) ÷ 2 = 1,335 mm (4 ft 5 in) each side
- Side walls
- 1,650 mm (5 ft 5 in) from the centre line · beyond zone C's 1,500 mm (4 ft 11 in)
The head-end check is this calculator's own stand-in: the chair guide gives no position for the patient's mouth, so it asks for zone A's radius beyond the movement, where the zone sheet puts the stools.

QUESTIONS
Questions about this calculator
Why does the calculator use one dental chair's movement?
A treatment room's length depends on how far the chair travels as it reclines and rises. The A-dec 511's pre-installation guide publishes its full range of movement, 2,334 mm at the factory-set upper limit and 2,410 mm at the maximum. Other chairs differ, so check your own chair's guide. [3]
Why is the head end checked against 500 mm?
With the chair centred, the calculator asks for 500 mm beyond the movement at the head end: the radius of zone A, where one maker's description of the ISO/FDI zones puts the dentist's and the assistant's stools. No source read gives a clearance behind the head, so this is the calculator's own stand-in, not a published figure. [4]
Should I measure inside the walls?
Yes. The VA and DoD figures are net square feet (NSF): the floor of the room itself, inside its walls. [1, 2]
What does "within zone C" mean for the side walls?
Zone C is the 1.5 m circle around the reclined patient's mouth within which, as one maker describes the ISO/FDI scheme, fixed cabinets go. The calculator measures from the chair's centre line, where the mouth lies, to each side wall; at 1.5 m or less, cabinets on those walls fall inside zone C. [4]
