PLAY EQUIPMENT

What fits in a 5,000 sq ft indoor playground?

The play hall is 3,976 sq ft (369.3 m²), 80% of the plan; its centrepiece, Go Play Systems' GPS1053 Two-Level Play Structure with Wave Slide (24 × 32 ft, 10 ft high), covers 15% of it, and all the play equipment 47%. The CPSC handbook asks for a use zone of 1,829 mm (72 in) around public playground equipment such as playhouses, climbers and slides [1]; this plan has none of those, so the planner keeps no zone here. Soft contained play is outside the handbook's scope [1], so the planner keeps no zone around it, nor around the ball pits, rockers, trampolines and the climbing wall, for which its rules have no figure.

Real products are the playground library's branded items at their makers' published sizes; generic models have approximate sizes. The use zone is the handbook's voluntary guideline [1], checked as guidance, not compliance. The toddler area's 11 low barrier panels are not counted as play equipment.

Seats in the plan
WhereWhatSeats
Party rooms (2)Kids' chairs round three round party tables, and a parents' sofa, in each42
Café10 two-tops, the aisle between tables kept, and a counter of two units20

A parents' bench or party-room sofa counted as three seats; the shoe bench by the entrance is not counted.

Washrooms: two of 7 × 8 ft, each with a toilet and a basin. How many your venue needs is set by your plumbing code's fixture counts, and how many children it may hold by your building official; this page checks neither.

IN PRACTICE

The 5,000 sq ft indoor playground plan in practice

At 5,000 sq ft two party rooms of 24 × 16 ft stand one behind the other down the left wall, one pink on a blue rubber floor, one yellow on green, each laid with three round kids' party tables in a cluster, each a different bright colour with six kids' chairs (18 children), a cake and gift table, and a parents' corner with a sofa for 3, so two parties can run at once. The café has a real counter (two counter units on the right wall) and 10 two-tops (20 seats) facing the toddler area and the structure.

The centrepiece is a real product, Go Play Systems' GPS1053 Two-Level Play Structure with Wave Slide (24 × 32 ft, 10 ft high at its maker's published size; it stands on 581 sq ft, 15% of the play hall), against the left wall below the party rooms, its three-lane wave slide running toward the front of the hall. Active play surrounds it: a trampoline, soft steps, a foam pit and the octagon ball pit beside the party rooms; a climbing wall, a ninja foam pit and a toddler trampoline at its right; a trampoline and soft blocks beside the slide; a tumble track, a modular trampoline bay, a castle ball pit and a second octagon ball pit in front. The fenced toddler area (11 pieces) stands next to the café, and play equipment covers 47% of the hall.

PLAN CHECK

What the planner checked

The planner's Plan check ran on this plan as it ships: walls, doors and their approaches, a way from the entrance to every room, items inside their rooms and clear of each other, and the clearance guidance below. It found nothing blocking and no guidance warnings.

Clearance guidance that applies to items in this plan
Guidance (and its source)Items it applies toIn this plan
Leave 305 mm (12 in) of aisle between tables, beyond a 483 mm (19 in) chair line where people sit (IBC, as adopted in Minnesota).18Kept
Keep 1.4 m (4 ft 7 in) by 2.2 m (7 ft 3 in) clear in front of a reception counter for a wheelchair user (Part M guidance, England; 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) by 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) with a knee recess).1Kept
Keep 914 mm (3 ft) clear along a serving counter for the queue; 1.07 m (3 ft 6 in) is better (Massachusetts 521 CMR 17.6.1).2Kept

Plan check is guidance for an early layout, not a code, accessibility or safety review. Local codes, the equipment you buy and a qualified professional decide the final plan.

AT THIS SIZE

What changes at this size

  • At 50 × 100 ft, the back row is storage and two washrooms beside the party rooms, and the play hall takes 80% of the floor, in zones with their own floors: active play, soft-play structure, active play, active play, toddler area, shoes & cubbies, reception and café.
  • The centrepiece is a real product, Go Play Systems' GPS1053 Two-Level Play Structure with Wave Slide (24 × 32 ft, 10 ft high at its maker's published size; it stands on 581 sq ft, 15% of the play hall); 11 pieces stand in the fenced toddler area.
  • Play equipment covers 47% of the play hall. None of the 25 pieces is equipment the CPSC handbook gives a 1,829 mm (72 in) use zone (playhouses, climbers, slides), so no empty ring is kept round any of them; add a freestanding slide or playhouse and the planner keeps its zone.
  • Against the 3,000 sq ft indoor playground plan: 2,000 sq ft more inside the walls, 7 more pieces of play equipment and 33 more seats.

QUESTIONS

Questions about this plan

How much play space is in a 5,000 sq ft indoor playground?

In this plan the play hall is 3,976 sq ft of the 5,000 sq ft, 80%; the party rooms, storage, two washrooms and the walls take the rest. The Go Play Systems GPS1053 structure covers 15% of the hall and all the play equipment 47%, with walkways of at least 1,200 mm (47 in) between the zones. No piece is one the CPSC handbook gives its 1,829 mm (72 in) use zone (playhouses, climbers, slides), so none is kept. [1]

How many children can a 5,000 sq ft indoor playground hold?

This plan does not set a capacity. Your building official sets the occupant load from the floor and its use, and each piece of play equipment comes with its maker's instructions; the plan's 25 pieces and 62 seats are a starting point for that conversation, not an answer to it.

Why does the 5,000 sq ft indoor playground plan have two party rooms?

So two parties can run at once: each 24 × 16 ft room seats 18 children round three round kids' tables and 3 adults on a parents' sofa, with a cake and gift table, and has its own door onto the play hall. Together they take 768 sq ft, 15% of the plan.
