The planner lets two machines' clear areas share floor, so a room can need less than this total, never less than the machines alone. Check whether they fit your room. The 600 mm around the rack, benches and air bike is FloorPlanCraft's default: two makers ask for it around their own rower and rack, and these makers give no figure.

Planning guidance, not a code or compliance check. Sources: treadmill, Life Fitness Symbio Runner manual p. 12 [1]; 600 mm live area for its own rower, Life Fitness Row HX manual p. 6 [2]; 0.6 m free area for its own rack, inSPORTline CC300 manual [3].

METHOD

How the calculation works

Each machine's floor is its footprint plus the clear floor to use it and get off it: the makers' figures where they give one [1, 2], FloorPlanCraft's 600 mm default where they do not, or NSCA's stations for benches and the rack [4].

Footprint
the machine's published width × length
Treadmill
+ 2,000 mm (79 in) behind, as wide as the treadmill, and 600 mm each side, without corners
Rower, air bike, rack, benches
+ 600 mm all round, corners included
Dumbbell rack, plate tree
no clear area: no source gives one for storage
NSCA bench station
(bench length + 3 ft) × (7 ft + 3 ft), instead of the 600 mm
NSCA rack station
(bar length + 6 ft) × 10 ft, the bar 2,200 mm (87 in)
Totals
every machine × its count, alone and with its whole clear area

Worked example

The calculator's starting values: the garage home gym template's 7 machines with the planner's figures (its flat bench stands inside the rack, so it starts at 0).

1 × treadmill
0.93 × 2.15 m → 2.13 × 4.16 m with its clear area, 6.4 m² (69 ft²)
1 × rower
0.52 × 2.13 m → 1.72 × 3.33 m with its clear area, 5.7 m² (62 ft²)
1 × air bike
0.75 × 1.40 m → 1.95 × 2.60 m with its clear area, 5.1 m² (54 ft²)
1 × power rack
1.40 × 1.19 m → 2.60 × 2.39 m with its clear area, 6.2 m² (67 ft²)
1 × adjustable bench
0.66 × 1.46 m → 1.85 × 2.66 m with its clear area, 4.9 m² (53 ft²)
1 × dumbbell rack
2.14 × 0.59 m, no clear area, 1.3 m² (14 ft²)
1 × plate tree
0.62 × 0.62 m, no clear area, 0.4 m² (4 ft²)
Machines alone
8.4 m² (91 ft²)
With every clear area whole
30.0 m² (323 ft²)

The total counts every clear area whole. In the planner and in the home gym size calculator two clear areas may share floor, so a room can need less than the total, never less than the machines alone.

Life Fitness Symbio Runner (treadmill)36.5 × 84.85 × 65.73 in [1]2 m behind the deck (EN ISO 20957 and ASTM F2115 as the maker quotes them); 600 mm each side, FloorPlanCraft's default, more than ASTM's 0.5 m [1]
Life Fitness Row HX Trainer (rower)20.47 × 83.85 × 22.04 in [2]600 mm all round: the maker's 3,330 × 1,720 mm operating area [2]
Rogue Fitness Echo Bike V3.0 (air bike)29.5 × 55 × 52.25 in [9]600 mm all round, FloorPlanCraft's default (the maker gives none)
Titan Fitness TITAN Series Power Rack (power rack)55.125 × 47 × 90 in [6]600 mm all round, FloorPlanCraft's default (Titan gives none); NSCA's rack station is larger [4]
REP Fitness FB-5000 Competition Flat Bench (flat bench)21 × 50.5 × 16.9 in [7]600 mm all round, FloorPlanCraft's default (REP gives none); NSCA's bench station is larger [4]
REP Fitness AB-5200 2.0 Adjustable Bench (adjustable bench)25.8 × 57.6 × 17.5 in [8]600 mm all round, FloorPlanCraft's default (REP gives none); NSCA's bench station is larger [4]
REP Fitness Commercial Dumbbell Rack (dumbbell rack)84.24 × 23.33 × 31.52 in [10]None: storage, and no source gives a figure
Titan Fitness Portable Weight Plate and Barbell Storage Tree (plate tree)24.5 × 24.5 × 57.625 in [11]None: storage, and no source gives a figure
NSCA bench station(L + 3 ft) × (7 ft + 3 ft)Replaces the 600 mm around both benches when NSCA stations are chosen; the NSCA's own worked bench-press example uses a 6 ft bench [4, 5]
NSCA rack station(bar + 6 ft) × 8–10 ftReplaces the 600 mm around the rack; the calculator uses the 10 ft end and the REP Alpine bar's 2,200 mm (87 in) [4, 12]

Sizes as each maker publishes them; the planner rounds them to the millimetre. The standards the treadmill manual quotes (ASTM F2115, EN ISO 20957) were not read themselves.

Guidance for an early layout. FloorPlanCraft does not certify a gym as safe or code-compliant; check each machine's manual, and for a commercial gym confirm exits, accessibility and floor loading with your building authority and a qualified professional.

QUESTIONS

Questions about this calculator

Why does the treadmill's clear area have no corners?

The treadmill's manual gives clear floor behind the deck and at each side, so the calculator keeps a 2,000 mm (79 in) strip behind it, as wide as the treadmill, and a 600 mm strip along each side, without squares at the corners. [1]

What is the difference between the 600 mm default and NSCA stations?

600 mm all round is FloorPlanCraft's default where a maker gives no figure; two makers ask for it around their own rower and rack. NSCA's stations size the whole floor a lift needs in a strength facility: a bench's length plus 3 ft by 7 ft plus 3 ft, and a rack's bar length plus 6 ft by 8 to 10 ft. They are larger. [2, 3, 4]

Why is the room I need smaller than the total?

The total counts every machine's clear area whole, as if none touched. Clear areas may share floor with each other, as in the planner, but never reach a wall or another machine, so a room can need less. The home gym size calculator lays your machines out in your room to check.

Why do the dumbbell rack and the plate tree have no clear area?

They are storage, and none of the sources read gives a clearance figure for storage, so the calculator counts their footprints only. Leave room to reach them in your own layout.

Can I enter my own machine's size?

No. The calculator uses eight real products at their makers' published sizes, so every figure has a source. For another model, take its footprint and clearances from its own manual.
