The planner lets two machines' clear areas share floor, so a room can need less than this total, never less than the machines alone. Back to the room check above. The 600 mm around the rack, benches and air bike is FloorPlanCraft's default: two makers ask for it around their own rower and rack, and these makers give no figure.

METHOD

How the calculation works

The calculator follows the planner's own rule: a clear area may share floor with another machine's clear area, but may not reach a wall, another machine or the walkway. It places the machines one by one with a simple search.

Room
width × depth, less a 914 mm (36 in) walkway along the door wall if you keep one
Too small
the machines' footprints alone exceed the room's floor (less the walkway)
Order
largest clear area first
Place
each machine at the first free position from the top-left, in any of four turns, trying positions against the walls and against each placed machine and its clear area
Fits
every machine placed; otherwise each unplaced machine says why
Ceiling (optional)
the tallest chosen machine's published height, and NSCA's 12 ft to 14 ft for a strength facility

Worked example

The calculator's starting values: the template's 6 × 6 m garage with a walkway along the door wall, and its 7 machines.

Room
36.0 m² (388 ft²)
Walkway
− 5.5 m² (59 ft²), 914 mm (36 in) wide
Machines alone
8.4 m² (91 ft²): less than the floor left, so the search runs
With every clear area whole
30.0 m² (323 ft²), within the floor left
Result
7 of 7 machines placed · it fits

The search finds one arrangement, not the best: when it cannot place a machine, another arrangement might still work, so try it in the planner. The tallest machine here is the power rack, 2,286 mm (90 in) high.

Life Fitness Symbio Runner (treadmill)36.5 × 84.85 × 65.73 in [1]2 m behind the deck (EN ISO 20957 and ASTM F2115 as the maker quotes them); 600 mm each side, FloorPlanCraft's default, more than ASTM's 0.5 m [1]
Life Fitness Row HX Trainer (rower)20.47 × 83.85 × 22.04 in [2]600 mm all round: the maker's 3,330 × 1,720 mm operating area [2]
Rogue Fitness Echo Bike V3.0 (air bike)29.5 × 55 × 52.25 in [9]600 mm all round, FloorPlanCraft's default (the maker gives none)
Titan Fitness TITAN Series Power Rack (power rack)55.125 × 47 × 90 in [6]600 mm all round, FloorPlanCraft's default (Titan gives none); NSCA's rack station is larger [4]
REP Fitness FB-5000 Competition Flat Bench (flat bench)21 × 50.5 × 16.9 in [7]600 mm all round, FloorPlanCraft's default (REP gives none); NSCA's bench station is larger [4]
REP Fitness AB-5200 2.0 Adjustable Bench (adjustable bench)25.8 × 57.6 × 17.5 in [8]600 mm all round, FloorPlanCraft's default (REP gives none); NSCA's bench station is larger [4]
REP Fitness Commercial Dumbbell Rack (dumbbell rack)84.24 × 23.33 × 31.52 in [10]None: storage, and no source gives a figure
Titan Fitness Portable Weight Plate and Barbell Storage Tree (plate tree)24.5 × 24.5 × 57.625 in [11]None: storage, and no source gives a figure
NSCA bench station(L + 3 ft) × (7 ft + 3 ft)Replaces the 600 mm around both benches when NSCA stations are chosen; the NSCA's own worked bench-press example uses a 6 ft bench [4, 5]
NSCA rack station(bar + 6 ft) × 8–10 ftReplaces the 600 mm around the rack; the calculator uses the 10 ft end and the REP Alpine bar's 2,200 mm (87 in) [4, 12]
Walkway along the door wall914 mm (36 in)Passageways between equipment, kept free of machines and clear areas [5]
Facility ceiling3,658 mm (144 in) to 4,267 mm (168 in)NSCA's 12 to 14 ft of ceiling clearance for a strength facility, compared with your ceiling [5]

The room check always uses the planner's figures; NSCA stations in the machine list change only its totals.

One arrangement from a simple search, for an early layout: it treats the room as a rectangle and leaves out doors, windows and columns. FloorPlanCraft does not certify a gym as safe; check each machine's manual.

QUESTIONS

Questions about this calculator

Is the layout it draws the best one?

No. It is one arrangement a simple search found: the largest clear areas first, each machine at the first free place from one corner. When it cannot place a machine, another arrangement might still work, so the result says what blocked it; try it in the planner.

Why keep a walkway along the door wall?

So you can get in and out past the machines. The calculator keeps a 914 mm (36 in) strip along the door wall free of machines and clear areas, the NSCA's figure for passageways between equipment; you can turn it off. [5]

How does it check the ceiling?

If you enter a ceiling height, it compares it with the tallest machine you chose, at its published height, and with NSCA's 12 to 14 ft for a strength and conditioning facility. No source read gives a ceiling figure for overhead lifts or pull-ups at home. [5]

What does the calculator leave out?

Doors, windows and columns: it treats the room as a rectangle with the walkway along one wall. It also does not put a bench inside the rack, which is why the flat bench starts at 0. The planner lets you place everything where it really goes.
