THE PLAN

The floor plan, room by room

Measured inside the walls. The plan opens in the planner exactly as drawn here: move, add or remove anything.

EQUIPMENT

What fits in a one-car garage gym?

Every machine here is a real product at its published size [3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 2]. A treadmill keeps 2.00 m clear behind its deck and 600 mm beside it [1]; the rack, the benches and the bike keep FloorPlanCraft's default 600 mm all round, the operating area Life Fitness gives its own rower [2]; storage keeps none.

The rack carries a pair of TITAN roller J-hooks with the 2.20 m REP Alpine bar [9] on them, so its size and clear area run to the bar's ends; the bar has 605 mm (24 in) to the back wall and 617 mm (24 in) to the air bike. The flat bench stands in the rack's open middle, as in the garage home gym template, and the dumbbell rack and the plate tree are shown loaded.

NSCA guidance for strength facilities asks 12 ft to 14 ft of ceiling [10]; this plan does not check the ceiling.

IN PRACTICE

The one-car garage gym in practice

A 12 × 20 ft garage turns the rack sideways: against the side wall, facing across the garage, the bar on its J-hooks runs along the garage's length with 605 mm (24 in) to the back wall and 617 mm (24 in) to the air bike. The front opens on a 9 ft overhead garage door, and the cardio faces it: the air bike and the rower in a row, clear of the door's 900 mm (35 in) approach.

People come in by the side door near the front or through the garage door; the plate tree and the dumbbells stay at the back right, within reach of the rack. A treadmill does not fit beside the rack here: with its 600 mm sides it needs 2,127 mm (84 in) of width, and the garage leaves 1,259 mm (50 in) beside the rack's clear area. The two-car garage plan has one.

PLAN CHECK

What the planner checked

The planner's Plan check ran on this plan as it ships: walls, doors and their approaches, a way from the entrance to every room, items inside their rooms and clear of each other, and the clearance guidance below. It found nothing blocking and no guidance warnings.

Plan check is guidance for an early layout, not a code, accessibility or safety review. Local codes, the equipment you buy and a qualified professional decide the final plan.

AT THIS SIZE

What changes at this size

  • Against the 15 × 15 ft home gym: 15 sq ft more floor and 1 more piece of equipment (adds a rower).
  • The rack's clear area takes 3.40 m × 2.39 m of floor in every size; what changes is what fits beside and in front of it.
  • Bar loading: 605 mm (24 in) to the back wall and 617 mm (24 in) to the air bike, at least the 600 mm (24 in) the plans aim for.

QUESTIONS

Questions about this plan

Can a one-car garage hold a home gym with cardio?

This plan's 12 × 20 ft room (240 sq ft (22.3 m²)) holds a power rack, a flat bench, a plate tree, a dumbbell rack, an air bike and a rower with every clear area kept. Not in it: treadmill and adjustable bench, which need 2,127 × 4,155 mm and 1,855 × 2,663 mm with their clear areas. [1]

Does a treadmill fit in a one-car garage gym?

Not beside a rack with its bar in this plan. With 600 mm clear each side a treadmill needs 2,127 mm (84 in) of width, and the 12 ft garage leaves 1,259 mm (50 in) beside the rack's clear area, and in front of the rack, between that clear area and the garage door's 900 mm (35 in) approach, there is too little length for the treadmill itself. This plan takes the air bike and the rower instead; the two-car garage plan has the treadmill. [1]
